The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to the chief secretary, Delhi government and commissioners of three Delhi Municipal Corporations on the substandard quality of food being served under the mid day meal scheme in the city. Millennium Post was the first to carry the news report 'Over 90 % mid day meal samples fail quality test' on 11 March 2013, which was followed by several media. The newspaper, kept up its campaign against the poor quality of food being served, with subsequent articles such as, 'Baiting Hungry kids for Profit' and 'NGOs merely get less students for serving food that sends children to hospitals'.
'The officers have been given four weeks time to reply to the notice,' said a press release by NHRC on Thursday.
The Commission in its notice has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of right to health of the children. The officers concerned have also been directed to inform the Commission of the steps taken for improving the quality of mid-day meal as well as functioning of NGOs, who are supplying it to the schools.
