Assam Police Tuesday picked up a senior leader of a militant outfit for questioning for his alleged involvement in illegal trade of rhino horns, an official said.
Karbi Anglong district's Superintendent of Police B.B. Chetri confirmed this and added that they have picked up S. Timung, chief of the armed wing of Karbi Longri N C Hills Liberation Front for questioning in the illegal rhino trade. The KLNLF had entered into a ceasefire agreement with India in 2010.
‘The senior leader of the outfit is, however, yet to be arrested,’ the SP said.
‘We had stepped up our operation in and around the district after several rhinos were killed brutally by suspected poachers near the Kaziranga National Park, which are located in Karbi Anglong district,’ said the SP, while adding that the 21 people arrested so far are all linked to the Naga and Karbi militant outfits in some ways.
‘We cannot say whether the militants are involved in poaching but there are indications that they are involved in the smuggling of the horns,’ he said.
The KLNLF was formed to fight for self-rule in Karbi Anglong and N C Hills (Dima Hasao) district.
