MHA may initiate probe against ex-U’khand Guv for exercising power ‘illegally’

Union Home Ministry (MHA) is likely to initiate a probe against former Uttarakhand Governor Aziz Qureshi for exercising his power “illegally” even after being transferred to Mizoram.

Qureshi became the Governor of the state on May 15, 2012 and his transferred letter to Mizoram was issued on December 12, 2014. Later, due to his differences with the centre, he was sacked as a Mizoram governor on March 28, 2015. He had even approached the Supreme Court against attempts to remove him but his effort went in vain.

There are allegations that Qureshi made re-appointments of some educationists even after he was transferred to Mizoram. It was learnt that the vice-chancellor of Uttarakhand University of Horticulture and Forestry (UUHF) Dr Matthew Prasad (who was appointed on August 18, 2011) tenure had ended on January 2015 but surprisingly he was reappointed on January 2, 2015 even after centre issued Qureshi’s transferred letter on December 12, 2014.

Similar irregularity was also noticed at Uttarakhand Ayurvedic University. The vice-chancellor of the university Satyendra Prasad Mishra was re-appointed on January 7, 2015 but the fact was Qureshi got a transferred letter in December. In both the cases, the questions arise that on what capacity Qureshi made the re-appointments and should his signatures in both the cases should be termed as invalid or not.

While going deep in the alleged misconduct, it came to notice that Raj Bhavan in Uttarakhand is a heritage building and it’s Golf Club (set up on November 9, 2000, the day Uttarakhand became a separate state) is the exclusive property of the government. However, despite knowing the fact, Qureshi amended some rule in 2014 to make a way for the private players so that they can access to the Club for alleged commercial activities.

Further scrutiny of records revealed that he also made appointments of two people identified as Naseem Khan and Shehzada Dehlvi in the Golf Club as an employee after his transfer and misuse of state aircrafts. Concerned over several irregularities BJP spokesperson Anil Baluni has reported the matter to the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and asked for a probe in to the matter.

Speaking to the Millennium Post Baluni said, “There are so many charges against him and people should know the truth. We want the Centre to probe all the appointments made during Qureshi’s tenure.”
