The metro construction at the Ring Road has led to severe traffic congestion in various parts of south Delhi.
The small stretch at Ring Road near Moti Bagh has been giving a hard time to both commuters and traffic officials. The road witnesses bumper-to-bumper traffic congestion during peak hours.
However, experts have also pointed out other reasons for the traffic congestion at Moti Bagh. Dr Sewa Ram, an expert in traffic engineering said, ‘The problem is that the flyover at the Bikaji Cama place is steeper than other flyovers on the Ring Road. So vehicles approaching from AIIMS land at the Moti Bagh at a higher speed. This disrupts the equation of the traffic.’
To make things worse, the Moti Bagh flyover also witnesses merging-cum-diverging situation.
‘Whenever there is a merging-cum-diverging scenario, there has to be enough weaving length and breadth on the road to accommodate the vehicles. Otherwise, bottle-necks are inevitable,’ said Dr K Ravinder, senior scientist at the Central Road Research Institute.
He further added that to avoid traffic, some vehicles divert their routes and take the residential lanes.
