Metro tunnel under Ring Road completed

According to DMRC, the tunnel was built by its engineers without causing any disturbance to running traffic on the ring road.

The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) completed a 1,247 metre-long tunnel from Netaji Subhash Place to Shalimar Bagh consisting of 1,037 rings with a diameter of 5.7 metres, it added.

The TBM was lowered in October last year. The tunnel also crossed the elevated viaduct of the operational Dilshad Garden–Rithala Metro corridor near Netaji Subhash Place. ‘It was a major engineering challenge,’ said a DMRC spokesperson.

At this stretch tunnelling had to be done 19 metres below the surface as it had to pass below a drain near Netaji Subhash Place, he added. The tunnel also passed below the Kasturba Polytechnic, which is another major landmark in the area.

‘Another such tunnelling drive is expected to start in April,’ spokesperson said. The Majlis Park – Shiv Vihar corridor consists of 14 km underground stretch. At present, five other TBMs are working on different corridors across the city. In total, 19 TBMs are operational for tunneling work under the Phase 3 project.
