Metro thefts: Female pick-pockets more adept than male counterparts

Female pick-pockets, these days prove far ahead of their male counterpart in the field, especially when it comes to the Delhi Metro.

According to the Central Industrial Security Force(CISF) data from January-March 2015, a total of 53 suspected pick-pockets were detained, among whom 49 were females, while only 4 were males.

According to figures compiled by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), 49 women pickpockets were nabbed in metro as against 4 men in the Delhi-NCR region. The CISF, which is responsible for securing the Delhi Metro network and its 134 stations, handed over the accused men and women to the local police.

“Women pickpockets have been dominating the Delhi Metro premises. It has been found that they camouflage their

intentions by deploying a clever modus operandi of accompanying a child or carrying a toddler. In
most cases, it was found that the women, who were apprehended after the act of stealing were the least dubious,” said a senior official.

According to the data, 293 women pickpockets were nabbed from metros as against 22 men in the Delhi-NCR region in the year 2014. While in 2013, out of 466 pickpockets, 421 were women.

In 2014, CISF personnel also recovered over Rs 29.56 lakh in cash, cheques, drafts valuing over Rs 9 crore, foreign currency worth Rs 86,683, gold ornaments and other valuables worth more than Rs 16 lakh from the transit system.

144 laptops, 40 cameras, 115 watches, 447 mobiles and a dozen iPads and tablet computers, which were forgotten by the commuters mostly during frisking or in the platform areas, were also found. Most of these items have been restored to their owners, said the official.
