Central Secretariat and Udhyog Bhavan Metro stations will remain closed on Tuesday from 6 am to 10 am in the wake of sit-in protest by Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party here.
‘On the directions of the Delhi Police, four metro stations - Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Udyog Bhawan and Race Course were closed on Monday from 9 am onward,’ confirmed by DMRC’s spokesperson.
As advised by Delhi police, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation closed exit from stations – Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Udyog Bhawan and Race Course from 9 am in wake of dharna by AAP at the North block.
The interchange at Central Secretariat will continue and controlled exit of government employees from Central Secretariat will be allowed after checking their ID cards, the spokesperson said.
Later, Patel Chowk and Race Course metro stations were opened at 2.14 pm. The entry and exit to the Central Secretariat and Udyog Bhawan Metro stations remain closed as directed by the Delhi Police.
During the closure, movement of the interchange passengers was being allowed at the Central Secretariat metro station and regulated exit of employees with offices in the vicinity after the verification of the identity cards at Central Secretariat only in the morning.
A few commuters had a tough time reaching their destination this morning due to the closure of the Metro stations. The problem was compounded with prohibitory orders imposed in and around the high-security area with heavy police bandobast and barricades in places to restrict movement.
Many commuters reached office late as they had to get down at Rajiv Chowk Metro Station and walk all the way to their offices. ‘I was caught off guard in the morning as I was not aware about the closure of the Central Secretariat station. I reached office an hour late after walking down from Rajiv Chowk Metro Station to my office. Dharnas and protest during morning rush hours should not be allowed,’ said Shalini Singh, an MNC employee.
Around 12 noon Delhi traffic police blocked Rafi Marg, Raisina road, Kidwai Marg and diverted the routes. At 1 pm due to the diversion of routes, huge traffic congestion was seen on Windsor place circle, which led to huge traffic jams at Ashoka Road, Janpath, Ferozshah road and it was expanded up to Connaught Place. At 2 pm, a traffic jam hit Connaught Place and after that vehicles were found crawling towards Patal Chowk.
