Out of total suicide, 17 cases were of passengers jumping on road from platforms. According to the data provided by DMRC, so far 11 persons have taken the extreme step inside the metro premises by jumping on the track, in front of running trains.
It further shows that over a dozen ‘suicide-driven’ commuters were left severely injured while attempting to take their lives.
Last year, 13 persons died inside the metro premises. The details were provided by DMRC in response to an RTI application, filed by activist Aseem Takyar.
The DMRC, however did not maintain, as to why the commuters took the extreme step. ‘We have no separate records to show the reasons of the deaths as those are matters of police to be investigated,’ the metro operator said in the reply.
The DMRC official added that they have taken several steps minimise such incidents. ‘We have taken several steps to curb suicide incidents on metro tracks. We have provided rigorous training to train operators and other staff deployed at metro stations and improved CCTV network coverage across every corner of the platform,’ said DMRC spokesperson.
In a bid to curb such incidents, DMRC is also planning to install Platform Screen Doors (PSD) at all stations on two new lines — Mukundpur to Shiv Vihar and Janakpuri West to Kalindi Kunj.
In addition to that, it is also going to install PSDs at six heavily crowded metro stations of Yellow Line
(Jahangirpuri to Huda City Centre).
The stations of Kashmere Gate, Chandni Chowk, Chawri Bazar, New Delhi, Rajiv Chowk and Central Secretariat will have PSDs by November 2015, said a DMRC official.
