Metro’s ridership in Delhi has crossed the expected 20 lakh mark six times so far this month and the new age transport system has taken steps to further upgrade its commuter facilitation amenities like installation of additional automatic fare collection [AFC] gates.

In the last one month, Delhi Metro has registered a significant increase in its overall ridership. Its average daily ridership has increased from 17.88 lakh in May to 19.02 lakh in June.

Delhi Metro also registered its highest ever ridership of 20,94,067 on 11 June surpassing the earlier record of 20,83,755 set on 12 August 2011. In the month of June, Delhi Metro has crossed the 20 lakh mark in ridership a record six times so far, while it had crossed this mark only thrice till 31 May, DMRC spokesman Anuj Dayal said.

He said to ensure smoother movement of the commuters, DMRC would install more than 200 new AFC gates at different Metro stations. In addition, five new lifts have also been installed at some Metro stations.

The new AFC gates are slated to come up at important Metro stations of the network such as Kashmere Gate, Noida City Centre, Noida Sector 15, Dilshad Garden and Laxmi Nagar.

These gates would help commuters to quickly enter and exit from Metro stations, he said. The new lifts have been installed at the Patel Nagar, Chawri Bazar, Jasola and Vaishali Metro stations. Two lifts have been installed at Chawri Bazar.

Apart from these measures, the exit gate leading to New Delhi Railway station of the New Delhi Metro station has been redesigned to make the movement of commuters smooth and avoid overcrowding.

An additional customer care centre has been constructed complete with a segregated exit block consisting of nine AFC gates. The number of token counters has also been increased from 17 to 20, Dayal said.
