Mercury remains below normal

There was no respite from cold in the national capital on Monday as the mercury plummeted below normal and fog affected road and air traffic in morning hours.

After rains during the past weekend, the city had dense fog in the morning which dissipated as the day progressed.

Drop in visibility led to traffic slowdown which caused inconvenience to office goers and commuters.

Though there was a rise in maximum temperature, compared to yesterday’s 19.5 degrees Celsius, it was still three notches below normal at 20.7 degrees Celsius, the MeT office said.

The minimum, which used to remain above normal during past few days, also dipped a degree below normal. It was recorded at 9.4 degrees Celsius, three degrees below from yesterday’s 12 degrees Celsius.

The city had 2.1 mm of rains in the last 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Monday, but there was no rains during the day. The MeT office has predicted a foggy morning tomorrow which would give way to clear sky. The maximum and minimum is expected to remain around 22 and nine degrees Celsius, respectively. Dense fog affected the flight operations at the IGI airport this morning, leading to delay in schedule of around 40 flights.

The fog, which started to descend at the airport in the wee hours, became very dense between 3.30 am and 9.30 am. Though the general visibility dipped to less than 50 m, the runway visibility remained 150 m on the main runway and dropped upto 125 m at the third runway. This led to some delay in flight operations, sources said. The schedule returned to normal after 10 am.
