Mentally disturbed 52-yr-old jail inmate commits suicide

Few hours after a 52-year-old man, who was detained by police for alleged domestic violence, committed suicide in police custody on late Tuesday evening. The accused was allegedly found hanging in Shakarpur police station in East Delhi. Family members cry foul, claiming it to be murder and a magistrate inquiry has been ordered.
The deceased has been identified as Sushil Gehlot, an auto driver, who was a resident of Shakarpur area. After his detention, he was kept in a lock-up and a constable, identified as Santri went to arrange food for him. When he returned at about 10.30 pm, he found Gehlot hanging from the lock-up gate.
According to police, he committed suicide by hanging himself using the nada of his underwear. “On spotted the situation, the constable informed senior officials at the police station, who immediately rushed him to the nearby Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital, where he was declared dead. The body has been sent for the post-mortem,” an official said. He further added that Gehlot was an addict of alcohol and even at the time of his detention, he was in an inebriated condition. According to the official, on Tuesday, a complaint was received from his wife that he was beating her because she refused to give him money to buy alcohol.
