Men in Metro women’s coaches: More than 3,500 fined till June ’14

Men need to be more careful while travelling in Delhi metros. They should watch out before they step inside a compartment while boarding the train. It’s only June and the CISF have caught more than
3,500 men ‘forcefully’ boarding the ladies’ compartment. All of them have been fined by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

Records of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) show that 3527 men were caught so far, from 1 January, 2014 and 30 June 2014, travelling in women’s compartment of the Delhi metro. Of the total figure, 447 were caught in June. A fine of Rs 250 has been imposed for such offence by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC).

It’s not that everybody is fined. Most men are excused on the grounds of lack of awareness or rush in the metro when the gates are about to close. ‘These 3527 cases relate to the ones who act stubborn and force themselves with baseless arguments,’ says Hemendra Singh, Deputy Commandant (PRO) at CISF.

When they are caught, they desperately try to validate their arguments with reasons ranging from seats vacant in the ladies’ compartment to the very need of reservation of a compartment for women in the metro, he further says. But a comparative analysis of the record with that of the previous year reveals, men in Delhi must have changed, at least, in regard to women reservation in the Delhi Metro. As compared to 3527 this year, last year 9216 men had been fined, between 1 January, 2014, and 30 December 2014, for the same offence.

And the highest number of cases – more than 2000 – has been recorded in previous June.
‘The figures have turned better largely because of the continuous awareness drives pursued by us,’ Hemendra Singh added.
