Men-in-Blue post 5-wkt win

India scored a comfortable five-wicket win over Derbyshire in their second tour game to gather much-needed momentum ahead of the Test series against England. India, who had scored 341 for 6 declared in response to Derbyshire’s first-innings total of 326 for 5 declared, were set a target of 142 on the final day of the three-day tour game at the County Ground in Derby as Derbyshire declared their second innings after scoring 156 for 3 in 45 overs.

India had around half a day to scale the target and given the form their batsman had been in, it was never going to be a problem. The loss of Shikhar Dhawan for 9 to Matt Higginbottom early in the innings was a setback they had to work around. Ajinkya Rahane (39) and M Vijay (41) then joined hands and steadied the ship before the duo retired to give the rest of the batting order a chance to get some valuable time out in the middle.

Rohit Sharma, however, didn’t make the most of the opportunity as he was dismissed for 10 by David Wainwright, the leftarm spinner. Wriddhiman Saha fell 19 to Greg Cork with six runs to win but Gautam Gambhir, joined by Ravindra Jadeja, wrapped things up with a boundary as India went through to a comfortable win in the 37th over with five wickets to spare.

Brief scores Derbyshire 326/5 decl in 90 overs  and 156/3 decl in 45 overs;  lost to India 341/6 decl in 91 overs and 143/5 in 36.3 overs (Murali Vijay 41, Ajinkya Rahane 39) by 5 wickets. agencies
