Meet may not settle Modi issue

The consensus, or the lack of it, over the name of Gujarat CM Narendra Modi as the head of the poll campaign committee continued to be the dominant theme on the eve of the meeting of the national executive of the BJP beginning on Friday in Goa. That the party brass has not been able to reach unanimity on the matter was reflected in the statement given by party leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy, who said, ‘Nothing has been firmed up yet.’

There are, however, apprehensions that some of the supporters of the Gujarat chief minister may publicly demand during the conclave that Modi be made the head of the campaign committee. Even at the Surjakund executive of the party, such a demand was made by former union minister Hukumdeo Narain Yadav. It was shot down by the leadership.

‘However, the conclave in the land of Mandovi river (Goa) is being held at a different time from when it was held in the land of river Yamuna,’ said a senior party leader. Modi has, since then, won a record third term as chief minister and forces for and against him are now more clearly demarcated.

Party leader Yashwant Sinha indicated that in the absence of a consensus, Modi’s name may not be announced at all. ‘The national executive of the BJP is too large as a body to discuss leadership issues,’ said Sinha. Departing from the usual practice of passing a economic and political resolution at the meet, this time around it will pass resolutions on internal and external security situations and the UPA’s failure to deal effectively with challenges.
