Meenakshi Lekhi inaugurates Nomadic Haat

With inauguration of ‘Nomadic Haat’ near Hanuman Temple subway in Lutyen’s’ area, New Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi launched week long celebrations of the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) on the occasion of Independence Day.

Speaking on the occasion Lekhi hoped that the Nomadic Haat at BKS Subway will be a centre of excellence in promoting the art and craft of nomadic communities. Lekhi appreciated this effort of NDMC for utilising the subways for providing much needed marketing facility to the nomadics.

The mission of the proposed centre is to empower, address and engage Tribal and Nomadic Communities of Banjaras, Kalbeliyas, Bawariya, Bhopa, Jogis, Kalandars, Gadiya Lohars and Raibari in providing them with alternative livelihood. Jalaj Shrivastava, Chairman informed that the highlights of this Nomadic haat are participatory workshops for visitors on Nomadic music, art and craft, Setting up Culture gallery using installations of rare nomadic lifestyle items, Archival Nomadic Media Art and Documentation corner (for academia, anthropologist and interns of various universities and schools).

The civic body is also organising street play and prabhat pheri at all the NDMC schools to integrate students in the celebrations.
