MCDs ‘Modify’ work culture, crack the whip on babus

Inspired from Narendra Modi’s style of functioning, BJP-led civic corporations in Delhi have asked officials to make presentations for meetings and submit timely reports of the work being done.

For the first time, senior leaders from the corporations have directed officials to come prepared with a brief but informative presentation at every standing committee meeting. Satish Upadhyaya, chairman of standing committee in South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) said, ‘Three to four presentations will be made during every meeting by concerned officials from every department. Strict action will be taken against the official who is not prepared.’

On asked whether the move was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said, ‘Any change for good is always welcome. The work culture needs to change. I can’t go everywhere individually. Therefore, the visual presentation will help a great deal. The responsibilities have been fixed’.
However, civic officials are facing a tough time adapting to the new ‘work culture’. At the standing committee meeting of SDMC on Tuesday, presentations made by officials were rejected by their seniors for being redundant.

The officials were reprimanded since the presentation did not contain any new information. ‘We already know what is there in your presentation. We want to know about your vision, your future plans. Better come prepared for the next meeting’, said Upadhyaya to an officer.  Narendra Modi, after assuming office as the prime minister, had asked bureaucrats to prepare a short presentation before coming to meetings.
