MCD to appoint PTCAs for recovery of property taxes

For the recovery of dues in property taxes from all public and private unaccessed properties under the North Delhi Municipal Corporation, the civic body has announced to appoint Property Tax Collection Agents (PTCAs). The agency has said that there is a total of 10 lakh properties under the jurisdiction of North Delhi Municipal Corporation, out of which, 3,35,000 properties have their taxes cleared, while the remaining 6,65,000 are yet to pay their taxes. In the EDMC, there is a total of around four to five lakh properties, of which, only two lakh properties pay taxes.

The Corporation had earlier said that all properties falling in the domain of the municipal agency prior to April 2011 will be exempted from paying the property tax. In 2014, the Additional Solicitor General of India had ordered the Corporation not to have a single tax defaulter, including the ones exempted till 2011. Moreover, the tax defaulters will have to pay taxes with one per cent interest. As per reports, government agencies like the DDA, BSES, PGCIL and DTL, along with other big names, have not paid property taxes worth crores. The East, North and South Municipal Corporations have approached these government departments to improve upon their financial conditions.
