Mayur Vihar burns as rumours spread

After a boy in his early 20s was critically injured in an accident when cops tried to stop him in Mayur Vihar Phase-III, a mob set a CNG petrol pump, police booth, three bikes, a DTC bus and a mini truck on fire.

The incident took place when one of the policemen asked a bike rider to stop his motorcycle. But instead of stopping, he increased the speed. While passing from the barricades, he shouted that his child was in the hospital and so he could not stop.

A policeman then threw his stick towards him to stop him. The stick got stuck in the tyre of the motorcycle, which made the rider lose balance. The pillion rider then fell on the ground and received injuries on head.

According to eyewitnesses, the policemen standing nearby did  not even bother to take the injured to the nearby hospital. A few local people then gathered on the roadside and started throwing stones on the cops.

A rumour later spread that the injured had died in the incident. Enraged locals then marched towards the police post is in the jurisdiction of New Ashok Nagar police station and clashed with the personnel.

They also torched a police booth, a bus, three bikes, a mini truck and a car. The locals also destroyed the wondow panes of a nearby Delhi Jal Board office.

A person reportedly died in the deadly violence. After hearing about the deaths, people staying in different parts of Mayur Vihar came out and protested against the police.

At many places in east Delhi, people were seen throwing stones at the police personnel. Khora Colony and Khora village seemed to be the worst affected areas.

The incident was reported from Mayur Vihar phase-III around 8 pm. Some persons were injured as police used force to disperse the crowd and bring the situation under control.

Prabhakar, deputy commissioner of police (east), said, ‘I am here on the spot and I have no idea whether any one is dead or not. Both the injured persons have been taken to the hospital.’

‘The cops were trying to stop the riders and both of them pushed the cops and injured them,’ added Prabhakar. As many as  15 people and 13 cops were injured in the incident. Police have detained about 17 people from the crowd.

After a few hours, the mob set a CNG petrol pump located in Khora village on fire. Soon, paramilitary force reached the spot as well. Apparently, the fire tenders failed to reach the spot because of the barricading done by Delhi police at various places of east Delhi.  Meanwhile, Delhi Disaster Management team has reached the spot. A part of Khora village falls under district Ghaziabad but local police was nowhere to be seen.
