A mayor of a British town has landed herself into trouble by wearing footwear carrying print of the country's national flag - the Union Jack. She is now facing angry calls to resign.
Councillor Trudy Offer chose to wear the trendy Union Jack shoes as a mark of respect when 200 troops accepted the freedom of Warwick last Friday. But her fashionable footwear outraged a number of bystanders who said military traditions state that the Union Flag should never touch the ground, the Daily Express reported.
There have been claims that the patriotic high-heels she wore to an army parade contravened military protocol. The angry spectators, who had lined the streets to watch soldiers from Marlborough Barracks parade through the town last week, want the mayor be stripped of her title. In a letter to Warwick Town Council, one of the disgruntled spectators expressed her fury by writing: '[The mayor] was wearing shoes which were decorated to resemble the Union Flag.'
