Mayor, councillors fight over newspaper

A heated argument broke up between Mira Aggarwal, Mayor of North Delhi Municipal Corporation [NDMC] and Mukesh Goel, leader of opposition in NDMC, over selling of Panchjanya, the weekly mouthpiece publication of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh [RSS] in the premises of Civic Centre on Friday. After the spat with the mayor, which took place in front of the media, Goel and Farhad Suri, leader of opposition in South Delhi Municipal Corporation [SDMC] wrote letters to commissioners of NDMC and SDMC demanding action against officers and that an FIR should be filed with the Delhi police. Meanwhile, the mayor complained that she needs ‘security’ against such ‘misbehaviour’ by the opposition.

‘Selling of Panchjanya and other publications of RSS in civic centre creates a situation of ‘law and order’ and can spread ‘religious disharmony’. Such illegal and unconstitutional act could not be tolerated. An FIR must be lodged with the Delhi police immediately besides departmental enquiry,’ said Mukesh Goel to Millennium Post.

In the letter to commissioners of NDMC and SDMC, Goel has demanded an inquiry into the incident.

A similar letter has been written to both the commissioners by Farhad Suri. Both the leaders went to the second floor of the deliberative wing to have first hand information of the incident. ‘When we reached there, the members were selling the newspapers and RSS literature and collecting donations through slips. Since the twin buildings of Civic Centre belongs of NDMC, it has greater responsibility in the case,’ added Goel.

Mayor Aggarwal termed the incident ‘unfortunate’. ‘Goel misbehaved with me. I am going to write Chief Minister of Delhi, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Delhi Congress Committee President about this. I need security against such behaviours,’ said Aggarwal to the Millennium Post.

The Bhartiaya Janta Party [BJP] has organised a training programme for the newly elected councillor in a hall at second floor of deliberative wing of Shyama Prashad Mukherjee Civic Centre. According to sources, some members of RSS came their for membership of Panchjanya. They started selling the publications of RSS, including Panchjanya and collecting donations for annual and half yearly membership.

‘They came there on the request of councillors and selling Panchjanya is not a crime in India. The action of the opposition is shameful,’ said Yogender Chandolia, chairman of standing committee.
