Maya, Ramesh back Telangana as Andhra boils

The decision of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) to endorse the demand for separate state of  Telangana has had  a fallout in several parts of the country including the politically crucial state of Uttar Pradesh. Leaders across political lines on Wednesday advocated the division of the state. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Mayawati on Wednesday reiterated her demand for division of Uttar Pradesh into four separate states.

She also supported the creation of Gorkhaland, Vidharba and other smaller states in the country and claimed it was the only way to develop the area.

‘We have always supported smaller states because they can be managed easily,’ said Mayawati. The BSP leader said that the growth will be faster if the population is divided into four states. Mayawati during her tenure as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh got the proposal of dividing UP into four parts passed in legislative assembly in December 2011. However, the matter was put on back-burner after the change of government.

‘The Centre is yet to consider the recommendation sent on November 23, 2011, The Central government under Article 3 of the Constitution has all the powers to create a new state,’ she pointed out. The BSP Chief said that now the Central ministers from UP should pressurise the government for bifurcation of the state.

The BSP chief has found support from union Rural Development Minister Jairam Ramesh, who echoed the demands made by Mayawati and said that reorganisation of Uttar Pradesh is necessary as the state is ungovernable in its present form. ‘Purely from an administrative point of view, a state of over 200 million people, 72 districts, over 800 blocks, it’s just not governable. It is my personal view that from the administrative point of view the state should be reorganised,’ said Ramesh.
