May the best candidate win

The campaigning for the United States presidential election has come as a bit of a surprise. With it being the voting day, we now await the outcome of the election with interest. It is not clear till the last day which way the country will swing and there is suspense in the air. With President Barack Obama making his last stop in Wisconsin at what may be the largest rally at Madison, the Democrats are confident of doing well. It is not so different in the other camp, with the Republicans baying for Obama’s blood, as confident of victory as the other camp.

It is likely that the American presidential election will go down to the wire, though things, as usual, will not be clear till the fat lady sings. As the various states go in to vote, and Americans mobilise themselves for the big day, the world awaits with bated breath the
outcome of this fight. The campaign has not been without its share of dazzle and glamour, and the campaigning style of the two candidates has been reasonably impressive. Both the candidates have engaged in a battle of words and wits, but sadly there has not been as much debate on substantial issues as there should have been, given the serious issues that face America today.

At times, both the candidates have exchanged insults and barbs almost as if they were stand-up comics and not presidential candidates. It is sad but true that the debates between the two candidates were not up to the standard as compared to some past US presidential candidates, who did not let the debates fall below a certain level of dignity. Even Nixon, did not let the debate fall below a certain level; whether time will exonnerate him of various charges remains to be seen.

The many substantial issues that face America and the American people that have not changed much since his days. There are still issues about the inner cities and crime as well as the poor quality of education in the US. Successive presidents have tried hard to remove the poverty in some parts of American cities, despite the otherwise reasonable living standards in this country.

This time, unfortunately, the American economy has taken a hit with  productivity affected, which impacts markets internationally. Part of the crisis has been caused by differences between the European Union and the US over which the US president has no control. Many countries get affected when there is economic turmoil in the US largely because of the huge size of their economy. Therefore the two candidates should have outlined their policy towards the world more cogently. Sadly, they have not done so and have been opaque about their policy towards various international issues.
