‘Maths not compulsory for commerce aspirants’

The sixth day of the open house session of Delhi University remained chaotic for aspiring students and their parents. Approximately 800 students thronged the conference center at the North Campus on Wednesday.

Queries related to Bachelor in Honours with Management Studies topped the areas of concentration.

Several students and parents raised their doubts if Mathematics was mandatory in the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) course.

J M Khurana, dean of Students Welfare cleared their doubts and said, ‘Mathematics is not compulsory for commerce. The admission to the four-year programme in Commerce will now be for Bachelor with Honours in Commerce from this year. The admission to this course will be based on Discipline I (Commerce)’.

Gurpreet Singh Tuteja, deputy dean of Student Welfare said, ‘Till last year, most colleges were not accepting students in the Honours Programme of Commerce (B. Com (Honours)) without Mathematics.

Consequently, a large number of students who had pursued commerce without Mathematics in their Class XII were deprived of admission in different colleges’.

Tuteja added, ‘It has now been decided that requirement of Mathematics for all categories of students be removed for admission to Bachelor with Honours in Commerce’.
