Pushing their own political ambitions for all these days could now prove to be too dangerous for the dissident duo as they could well be on their way out after Saturday’s National Council meeting.
“It was unanimously decided that internal matters of party should not be discussed publicly,” Kejriwal camp leader Ashish Khetan said at a press conference on Friday. “When the party was fighting an existential war, two party leaders were trying to weaken the party and malign its image.”
Even if Yadav and Bhushan were concentrating on their own individual gains, the very idea that “internal matters” of the party should not be discussed publicly misunderstands the concept of internal party democracy. At the same presser, Kejriwal camp leader Sanjay Singh also asked why Yadav and Bhushan were taking all of this to the public.
Singh alleged that both the leaders were trying to find fault with Kejriwal. “Bhushan and Yadav are trying to show that they are the saviours and only we have problems,” he said during the press meet.
The AAP leader said several attempts had been made to ensure that the party remained united and intact. “As I have said earlier, and I repeat, we have tried a lot to save the family. We have discussed several times the possibilities that would help us keep our party intact but unfortunately, all efforts have gone in vain,” Singh said regarding the persisting deadlock.
Ashutosh was quoted by a private news channel: “I see a design, a conspiracy to malign image of AAP and Arvind Kejriwal.”
Sanjay Singh added that several questions had been raised by the duo trying to “prove that all mistakes and drawbacks are with Arvind Kejriwal and the rest. They said they would improve us.” He also denied Bhushan’s statement of not meeting their demands.
Singh said the party had agreed on some issues and discussions were being held on the others. “He said that the party should be brought under the RTI. He said volunteers should have a say in the decisions. We agreed on that,” Singh said. It was Yadav, he added, who proposed that all decisions should be taken via the secret ballot in the National Executive meetings.
“My question is that if secret ballot needs to be taken, then you should have waited for the National Executive as it would discuss who would be there in the National Council. And then, they said the five demands were not much important. And what Ashish Khetan and Prithvi Reddi decide will be enough for us,” he added.
Singh further said Yadav himself had made a list of people who would be elected to the National Executive. “Prithvi Reddi, Vijay Nair, Meera Sanyal, Atishi Marlena, Gul Panag, Maruti Bhapkar, Raghav Chaddha, Rahul Mehra, Dayamani Barla and Kiran Vissa were the ones named in the list,” he read it out.
Amid the raging battle within AAP, the duo, who were removed from the Political Affairs Committee, is all set to face ouster. With this, it has become all the more evident that it won’t prove fruitful for the second-tier leaders to take on Kejriwal, even if they disagree with him.
