Mastermind held in Noida kidnapping

Noida police on Sunday arrested the mastermind who had plotted the kidnapping of the head of a multi-national company in Noida on Friday evening. Noida police chief Preetinder Singh has announced a cash prize of Rs 5,000 and his appreciation to all the police personnel involved in the operation. The police had already rescued the victim from the clutches of the kidnappers in the wee hours on Saturday from their hide out in neighbouring Meerut.

'The main accused, Akhand Pratap Singh, is a cloth merchant who had orchestrated the kidnapping as a way out of his own  financial crisis,' said Preetinder Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police, Noida. 'He didn’t have any personal enmity with the victim, but randomly targeted him to make some quick money by demanding a high ransom for his return. However, he could not succeed owing to the alertness of the cops. As the kidnappers never got a chance to make their ransom call, we do not know how much they were planning to demand for his release,’ Singh added. The accused was arrested at approximately 1.30 pm from his hiding place near his residence in sector 93 in Noida.

Rathin Basu, country president and managing director of power industry supplier Alstom T&D India Limited, was kidnapped at gunpoint on Friday in Noida while returning to his sector 44 residence from his office in sector 65. He was taken to a house in Meerut, where Basu was allowed to receive a call from his family. His wife became suspicious when Basu, who usually speaks in English and Bengali with his family, started talking  in Hindi.
