Large number of heavy vehicles queued up at various entry points such as DND Flyway, Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway, Mathura Road, Kalindi Kunj Bridge, and other places due to the traffic restrictions imposed by authorities for full dress rehearsals ahead of Independence Day. Thousands of office goers were the worst affected as they went through a harrowing time due to the traffic snarls at major intersections in the city during peak hours.
Long traffic tails were witnessed at some of the major intersections in national capital. Hundreds of vehicles were stuck at ITO intersection leading to a huge traffic tail from Vikas Marg to Delhi Secretariat. For some unfortunate travellers, it took more than two-and-a-half hours to cross the eight-kilometer-long Maharani Bagh to Nizamuddin stretch on the Ring Road.
The traffic moved at snail’s pace in the Chilla Regulator area, which connects Noida to Delhi, via Mayur Vihar. The cascading effect of slow traffic was also seen on the DND Flyway as commuters diverted from Kalindi Kunj to the flyway route to reach Delhi. ‘There was slow traffic from morning till around 12 pm on the both sides of flyway as large number of small vehicles had turned up. The Delhi traffic police had also erected barricades on the flyway for checking the vehicles,’ said Anwar Abbasi, spokesperson of DND Flyway. Traffic movement remained slow in several parts of Noida as well.
Commuters going towards Ghaziabad were also stuck in jam at NH 24.
According to officials of Noida Traffic Police, they were asked by their Delhi counterparts to stop the entry of heavy vehicles in the city on Wednesday morning owing to the rehearsal. ‘There is no traffic
restriction for vehicles on Thursday from Delhi police’, said Rajiv Narain Mishra, superintendent of police (Traffic), Noida.
