The showers started around 10 am and slowly gathered pace and remained uniform throughout the city. The rain brought much needed respite for Delhiites reeling under hot and sultry conditions since the last several days. According to the Meteorological Department, 2.3 mm of rain was recorded in the national capital by 11.30 am. The Safdarjung observatory recorded 76.5 mm rainfall while areas under Palam, Ridge and Ayanagar observatories received 47.4 mm, 52 mm and 57 mm of rainfall, respectively.
The rain, however, brought with it the perennial problem of water-logging and huge traffic snarls were observed in almost entire Delhi. Despite the weekend, vehicular movement was slow in the capital owing to Raksha Bandhan on Sunday. Large number of people rushed out of their house to meet their relatives.
The civic bodies received several complaints of water-logging from areas such as Civil lines, GTB Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Defence Colony, Jangpura, Mathura Road and Jamia Nagar besides other. Traffic congestions were observed on Ring Road, Outer Ring Road, ITO, at stretches between Lajpat Nagar and AIIMS, Dhaula Kuan and Naraina, Wazirpur and Azadpur, and in Connaught Place.
Even the multi-lane expressways witness heavy traffic jams on Sunday.
Commuters who opted to use the toll bridge were the one who were affected. Delhi-Faridabad, DND and Delhi-Gurgaon expressway saw long traffic tails. ‘It took more than one and a half hour just to cross the toll booth,’ said a commuter who was on his way to Faridabad.
A traffic policeman said, ‘we were prepared for heavy on Raksha Bandhan but rainfall added to the woes.’
Meanwhile, the minimum temperature on Sunday was registered at 27.7 degrees Celsius while humidity remained at 83 per cent at 11.30 am.
