Mary Kom, Vikas, Satish shine among gloom in boxing ring

Incheon: MC Mary Kom came through unscathed on a day, when Indian boxing took one of its worst hits outside the ring, with two decisions that should clearly have been theirs went the other, both to Korean boxers – one each in men’s and women’s section.

Mary Kom battling a little-known Vietnamese boxer, Le The Bang, won comfortably and sailed into the final and was the only one of the three woman boxers to make the final. Pooja Rani and Sarita Devi lost their semi-finals and had to be satisfied with bronze medals.

Mary Kom’s win was almost routine as she dominated her bout. She virtually outclassed her rival and by the third round, it was all over bar shouting. Mark Kom will take on Zhaina Shekerbekova of Mongolia in the contest for gold.

Speaking about Sarita’s loss, Mary Kom said, ‘It’s sad to see such things happening in international boxing. Being a mom, I can understand how she would be feeling right now.’

On her own bout, Mary Kom, a bronze medallist in 2010 said, ‘It was a tough contest but she was not very accurate or else she could have troubled me more.’
