Maruti violence anniversary: Prohibitory orders in Manesar, workers to stage protest today

Prohibitory orders, banning the assembly of five or more persons, have been imposed around Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant in Gurgaon district, ahead of the fourth anniversary of violence on its premises on July 18, an official said on Sunday.

Gurgaon District Magistrate TL Satyaprakash has banned gatherings, protests and public meetings without prior permission from the administration under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code till July 19.

The Maruti Suzuki workers’ unions and other trade bodies have announced peaceful demonstration on Monday. On July 18, 2012, a violence had broke out at the car manufacturer’s Manesar plant, after a suspended Maruti Udyog worker had allegedly slapped a supervisor. The workers allegedly ran amok, setting a wing in the building to fire. A senior executive was killed and over 100 people were injured.

The company sacked 2,500 workers after the violence and the plant was closed for over a month. As many as 147 workers, including union leaders, were jailed and are facing trial at present.
The plant is now functioning with new staff.
