Martyr’s last rites performed at his Greater Noida village

The brave soldier’s last rites were performed in the presence of senior administrative officials and Army personnel on Sunday. The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh and assured some other facilities to the grieving family.

The martyr was cremated after family’s protest on Saturday against the attitude of the local administration. Family members said they felt hurt with the way the administration announced a compensation of Rs 20 <g data-gr-id="41">lakh</g> but no one turned up to pay their respects to the martyr. District Magistrate NP Singh met the family members on Saturday and had informed them of the relief offered by the state. “We have conveyed the information to the family. The amount will be delivered to them by Monday,” said Singh.

The body of <g data-gr-id="33">Jagveer</g> reached his parental village, Muradgarhi, at around 6 am on Sunday. Sub-District Magistrate of Jewar, Satish Chandra Shukla said the body had arrived at the Indira Gandhi International Airport at 8:10 pm on Saturday night and it was kept in an Army mortuary.

The entire village gathered outside his home to pay him a tribute. The deceased was to be cremated around 6:30 pm but the family refused to perform last rites due to the absence of senior officials.
The last rites were performed only after DM reached the village. Union Minister and local MP Mahesh Sharma was also seen in the funeral procession.

The villagers also submitted a memorandum to the district magistrate, asking for a Shaheed <g data-gr-id="36">Samarak</g> in the name of the soldier. <g data-gr-id="37">Jagveer</g> had joined the Army in June 1994 and was <g data-gr-id="43">awarded with</g> two bravery medals in 2012 and 2014 respectively. Notably, about 50 militants targeted the trucks in which the soldiers were patrolling with rockets. The trucks caught fire and several soldiers were burnt alive in what is being described as one of the worst attacks on the army in recent years.
The bodies of the soldiers were sent to their native places where the last rites were performed.
