Marked! Sly thieves keep R K Puram residents on edge

If you have a house in R K Puram, it’s time to get a burglar alarm installed. A rising number of thefts in the posh south Delhi area, has made residents nervous, and cops, claim the residents, are doing little to help. In the latest such incident in R K Puram, the house of a deputy commandant, BSF Air Wing, was robbed on the afternoon of 31 May. The miscreants removed the window grill near the rear entrance of the house to enter, and ransacked the entire house before leaving with valuables worth more than Rs 40,000.

The incident took place between 1 pm and 4 pm on 31 May. 'Such incidences of thefts have become common in Sector - 4 of R K Puram and I can’t see any preventive measures being taken up by the police,' said B Sreedhar, deputy commandant, BSF Air Wing at IGI airport in the capital. According to police officials, thieves removed the window grill near the rear entrance of the house and entered, while the front door remained locked from outside.
They ransacked the ground-floor house and took away valuables worth Rs 40,000, along with a Sony digital camera, mobile phone, utensils, clothes. 'The miscreants are specifically targeting houses whose owners are away on vacations. They are looking for gold jewellery, cash electronic goods and kitchen items. It has also been  learnt that they are trying to steal credit and debit cards,' said a police official. In the past week, more than four complaints have been registered at the R K Puram police station, but residents complain no action has been taken yet. When approached, officials at the R K Puram police station have the stock reply, 'We are probing the matter and further investigation is on. We are watching the nearby slum area, as the slum-dwellers are the primary suspects.'

Residents of R K Puram also claim that cases of theft are on the rise and there is a lack in security in the area because of the nearby slums. 'We feel scared to leave our house empty, even during the day, as the risk of our valuables being stolen are high,' said Geeta, a resident of Sector 4.
Millennium Post’s calls to the R K Puram councillor went unanswered.
