Maoist leaders meet Nepal PM, say ready for dialogue

A day after calling off their nationwide strike, Maoist top brass on Wednesday met Prime Minister Sushil Koirala to resolve the impasse over the promulgation of Nepal’s constitution through dialogue.

The withdrawal of strike created a conducive atmosphere for talks with the government to end the ongoing political stalemate as life returned to normal today across the country, Nepali Congress (NC) spokesperson Dilendra Prasad Badu said.

Krishna Bahadur Mahara and Barshaman Pun along with UCPN- Maoist spokesperson Top Bahadur Rayamajhi met Koirala at his office in Singhdurbar here, assuring that the opposition is ready for holding talks for drafting the Constitution by forging consensus with the ruling parties to end the current deadlock, he said.

Maoist leaders led by Mahara have taken initiatives for reaching a consensus in the constitution drafting process with the ruling parties, Badu said.

He said the team called on Koirala and other NC leaders to reach an agreement prior to the Constituent Assembly meeting scheduled for April 13.

Koirala welcomed the move of calling off the strike, saying he was ready for holding talks with the opposition alliance for resolving the political crisis.

“I have repeatedly urged for dialogues. Many disputes have been resolved, remaining will also be resolved,” Koirala was quoted as saying by Badu.

The 30-party opposition coalition had enforced a general strike yesterday, demanding ethnic identity based federal structure to be incorporated in the new Constitution. Over a dozen vehicles were vandalised and 50 people were arrested during the shutdown called by the opposition parties demanding consensus on promulgating the constitution.
