Manmohan sends out twitter invite to new PM

Even before the swearing in of Nawaz Sharif, the Indian Prime Minister’s office extended a twitter invitation to him to visit India at a ‘convenient time’.

Congratulating Nawaz Sharif for the win, the PM’s twitter page said: ‘PM expressed India’s desire to work with the new government of Pakistan in charting a new course for the relationship between the two countries. PM also congratulated the people and the political parties of Pakistan for braving the threats of violence and voting in large numbers.’

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid on Sunday morning had already expressed that the ‘government has had relations with Nawaz Sharif. I hope we can continue to have good relations if he comes to power. On the other hand, Sharif after mentioning a day before the elections that if he comes to power he will ‘work in bettering relations between Islamabad and New Delhi, after winning the majority he said, ‘We’ll pick the threads where we left. We want to move toward better relations with India, to resolve the remaining issues through peaceful means, including that of Kashmir.’

Senior Fellow at Center for Land and Warfare Studies (CLAWS), a research organisation, Alok Bansal said, ‘Nawaz Sharif return to power is certainly good for India. After all he was bold enough to articulate that he will not only set up an enquiry into Kargil War and Mumbai 26/11 but also share reports with India. For a Pakistani saying this before even coming to power is remarkable.’ Bansal added that there is a flip side that with his coming to power there is a threat of right-wing radicalization.

Welcoming Pakistan’s democratic transition, former foreign secretary Lalit Mansingh said ‘The positive take out for India had been that anti-India sloganeering was largely absent which shows that the electorate wants stability. Also, all manifestos, all parties, all leaders - be it Nawaz Sharif or Imran Khan - are promising good relations with India.’
