Manipuri man found dead in Chirag Delhi, family cries foul

A 28-year-old man from Manipur was found dead under mysterious circumstances when he was rescued from a shallow drain in south Delhi’s Chirag Delhi area. Locals claimed he had jumped into the drainage while the family cries foul.

The incident took place on the intervening night of Saturday-Sunday at around 1.30 am, when the locals in the area saw a man, later identified as Wilungbou, running very quick and suddenly jumping into a fast-flowing drainage in Chirag Delhi. Soon after he fell into the drainage he cried for help. The locals who witnessed him falling told the police that they had tried to rescue him but failed.

One of them made a call to the police control room at around 1.40 am and a police team along with the officials of fire department reached the spot. A rescue operation was started and at around 3 am, the teams managed to take him out of the fast-flowing drainage. He was unconscious with injury marks on his forehead. He was immediately rushed to the nearby hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

During investigation, his identity was established with the help of a document kept in his pocket. Accordingly, his family members were contacted. It was learnt that Wilungbou was working in a BPO in Gurgaon and was residing with his younger brother — Cailaid (24) in south-west Delhi’s Naraina area. Getting the information about the sudden demise of his brother, Cailaid reached the hospital and saw his brother’s body that was preserved in the mortuary. Observing several injury marks on his forehead, face and other body parts, he claimed to police that Wilungbou was murdered and it was a conspiracy.

He further told police that on Saturday evening, he went to meet his two friends, identified as Danish and Meel who lived in Chirag Delhi. Both of Wilungbou’s friends were called to Malviya Nagar police station for questioning. They told the investigating officers that on Saturday night they had gone to a pub to attend their friend’s party where the trio consumed alcohol. Meanwhile, Wilungbou left the place and suddenly started running on the road.

‘We did not follow him and few minutes later we returned to our residences,’ a police official said quoting the deceased friend’s statements.’ Locals claimed that they saw Wilungbou running and then jumping into a drainage. However, family members of the victim called the incident as criminal conspiracy pointing towards the injury marks. On the other hand, in the prima facie the police suggests that the injury marks were caused due to the impact of falling into the drainage.

‘We are investigating the case in all plausible angles including murder and accidental death. Autopsy reports are awaited that will clear the exact cause behind the injury marks and his mysterious death,’ the official close to investigation said. On Sunday afternoon, after conducting the post-mortem examination his body has been handed over to his family members to perform the last rites. ‘Further investigation is underway,’ he added.
