A trained Manipuri extremist and active member of a banned terrorist organisation, People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak [PREPAK], has been arrested by Delhi police special cell, said police on Tuesday.

‘Wahengbam Nanao, resident of Bishnupur in Manipur, was arrested from Gandhi Vihar area on Monday on the request of Manipur Police for attempted murder in Imphal,’ said Sanjeev Kumar Yadav additional deputy commissioner of police [special cell].

Around 20 days ago, he directed his associates in Manipur to throw a hand grenade at the house of forest officer in Wangkhei in Imphal East. His involvement came to light after one of his associates was arrested in Imphal East.

Nanao is second in command of the banned organisation PREPAK. He had been earlier arrested in 2004 and 2008 in Manipur for being involved in terrorist activities.

During interrogation, he told the police that he joined Peoples Liberation Army as ground worker in 2001 and in 2004, he joined PREPAK as a cadre. In 2004, he was arrested at Bishnupur police station in Manipur for being involved in terrorist activities and later released on bail in 2007. Again he was arrested and released on bail after a year. He then went to Myanmar and underwent arms training for one month at the training camp.

Thereafter, he moved to Nepal. He came to Delhi in 2011 and stayed at different places. He had been tasked to make extortion calls to people in Manipur. Around a fortnight ago, he was assigned by Captain Rajen Singh, a self-styled commander of Bishnupur, to make a extortion call to a forest officer and make a demand of Rs 5 lakh.

Nanao also made extortion calls from Delhi to other people in Manipur, which are being verified by the Manipur police. Nanao also told the police about various hideouts in Manipur, where arms and ammunition have been kept hidden. The Manipur police were informed about his arrest, said an official.
