Meanwhile, the Metro officials said that they hope to remove the barricades at ITO till the end of March this year which will bring an end to the traffic congestion in the starch.
Earlier, DMRC on December 17, 2014, had begun trial runs between Mandi House and ITO. Metro officials, however, refused to specify when the section would be opened for commuters. “Once we are completely satisfied with the trial runs, we will apply for clearance from the commissioner of metro rail safety. The commercial operations will start as soon as we get his approval,” said a senior DMRC official.
The corridor is completely underground and connects office areas at Mandi House and ITO, heritage sites of Jama Masjid, Red Fort, commercial centres and residential pockets in old Delhi. Besides office-goers, the opening of the ITO station will benefit sports enthusiasts who often come to watch football and cricket matches at Ambedkar and Feroz Shah Kotla stadiums, respectively.
The corridor is currently operational up to Mandi House. DMRC officials said the opening of this stretch, originally scheduled for December 2015, has now been advanced. The opening of the stretch has been advanced since the ITO Metro station will “cater to a large number of office-goers”. “As per the Detailed Project Report, approximately 22,000 passengers are expected to use the ITO Metro station by 2016. The number is likely to cross the 31,000 mark in 2021,” said a DMRC official.
