Man wanted for highway robberies held after 11 years

A man wanted in connection with a number of highway robbery cases has been arrested here after more than 11 years since he escaped from police custody and went away to the Middle East. According to the police, the accused, identified as Deen Mohammad, was nabbed here on Wednesday. He had not appeared in court since 2001 despite being declared a proclaimed offender in three cases with warrants having been issued against him, they added.

After Mohammad left the country for Dubai on a forged passport, his relatives had said that he was dead, said police. “In 2001, when Mohammad along with his associate Roshan and five other accused persons in a carjacking case were being taken to Kishangarh jail in a police van, they attacked the police party and managed to escape,” police said.

He had managed to get a passport in his name and used it to go to Saudi Arabia and subsequently to Dubai, police added.
