Despite being given police protection, a 40-year-old man was shot by two motorcycle-borne assailants at Jafrabad area in north-east Delhi on Friday evening.
The victim, Zahir (40), was an eyewitness of an incident in which his elder brother Akil was allegedly murdered about five months ago. His relatives said that he had received threats and was subsequently given police protection.
The assailants were identified by the police on Saturday, but their names were not disclosed.
According to police, about 5.30 pm on Friday Zahir was on his motorbike with a Delhi police official.
He had pulled over at a spot around 500 metres away from the Jafrabad police station when, suddenly, two bike-borne assailants stopped and threw chilly powder on the personal security official named Tejpal.
Before Zahir could react, one of them pulled out a pistol and started firing. The victim dodged the first few bullets but finally he was hit on his chest and head.
The PSO somehow managed to fire two rounds but missed the targets, who fled the scene immediately after Zahir was hit, said a police official.
He further said, police rushed to the spot immediately and saw Zahir lying in a pool of blood. The PSO was trying to help him. Soon Zahir was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared ‘brought dead’.
