Man, son die after being hit by train at unmanned crossing in Gurgaon

A 40-year-old man and his 8-year-old son were crushed to death by a speeding train at Pataudi crossing in Gurgaon on Sunday, police said.

The police said the incident took place at 12.15 pm, when the victims Ravinder was going with his son Aayush to pick up his wife from Doki village in their car. The car driver  was crossing an unmanned signal in Pataudi village when the Jaipur-Delhi Summer Special train hit the vehicle. Though the train driver had applied the emergency brakes, it dragged it the car for 400 meters, said a Gurgaon Railway Police official.

After the accident, the train driver immediately informed the station master of Gurgaon-Pataudi’s Railway police and the police.

After the incident, residents of nearby villages blocked the tracks for four hours and protested against the Railway authorities for not checking the crossings on a regular basis.

“We will enquire what went wrong at this crossing as it has been pointed out that the guard was not present when the incident took place. We will make sure that all crossings are always manned”, said Arwind, in-charge of the Gurgaon railway police.

The railway route was finally opened at 4:30 pm and the bodies were sent for post-mortem examination.

According to railway officials, four trains – including three express and one passenger train – were affected because of the protest by villagers. The engine of this summer special train was replaced by another engine before the services resumed.
