Man sets wife ablaze, held for murder

A man has been arrested by the Delhi police for burning his wife to death on Saturday afternoon near Karawal Nagar. The victim has been identified as Ambika, 26, and her husband, 37-year-old Satish Verma has been held for the crime.

The couple lived with their two daughters Saumya, 6, and Khyati,2, at Shahid Bhagat Singh Colont in Karawal Nagar where satish runs a clinic. The deceased was a registered medical practitioner.

Neighbours have said that Satish frequently fought with his wife over petty issues. He wanted his wife to bear a son, but Ambika was not interested in another child as she was happy with their two daughters.

Eventually, Satish started seeing a neighbour, which further soured the couple’s relationship.

On 28 February, Ambika returned home with Saumya after attending a marriage party, when Satish picked a fight with her. Ambika decided to move to her mother's place the next day.

An argument again broke out between the two when Ambika in formed her husband of her decision. 'An infuriated Satish brought kerosene, poured it over Ambika and set her on fire', said a senior police official.

Ambika ran out ablaze, trying to save herself.  A few neighbors spotted her and poured water on her. They then took her to the nearby Guru Tej Bahadur Hospital, with 95 per cent burn injuries and died at the hospital.

Based on the statement given by the couple’s daughter, Saumya, Satish has been taken under police custody for fourteen days and relevant cases of India Penal Code has been registered against him at the Karawal Nagar police station.
