A 33-year-old man who was illegally supplying 50 sophisticated pistols of .32 bore with 100 magazines in the city has been arrested by Delhi Police’s Special Cell from Sarai Kale Khan, police said on Wednesday. Till date, he claims to have delivered about 400 semi-automatic high quality illegal pistols in Delhi, NCR and Western Uttar Pradesh.
The accused, Savinder Kumar, a resident of Meerut, was supplying the consignment of arms to a Delhi-based man, who has been identified by police. However, at the time of the raid, the Delhi-based man did not come to receive the consignment, which was meant for criminals in Delhi and NCR.
“Raids are being conducted to nab the accused. It has been learnt that he is involved in criminal cases and is running a racket in which he is supplying the arms to the gangs operational in Delhi-NCR,” a source said.
According to Sanjeev Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), his team received an input about a large network of illegal weapons having roots in Bihar and operating in NCR, Delhi and adjoining areas of UP.
The network is involved in supplying of illegal fire arms to criminal elements. Sources were deployed and surveillance was mounted and Kumar was arrested with the weapons.
During investigation he told police that in order to earn easy money he started supplying illegal pistols. He has been involved in this illegal trade for the last 18 months, during which period he brought 6 consignments of illegal firearms from Dhanbad, Jharkhand. “For transporting the consignments he purchased a Cherry coloured, Chevrolet Aveo and got a special cavity made under the boot of the car,” said Sanjeev Yadav.
About a year ago, Singh also started a manufacturing and assembling unit of illegal firearms in Meerut with the help from the Dhanbad-based manufacturer.
Raw material and workers were specially brought from Jharkhand for starting the unit, which was operational for about a month. “Kumar was staying in a one room accommodation in Meerut and his room was surrounded by a huge open area. At his residence, he started manufacturing pistols but within a month, out of fear, he shut down the business. But in that month, he made many criminal contacts and became a popular name amongst the big gangs in Delhi, UP, Jharkhand, Haryana and other states,” a source said.
Speaking to Millennium Post, a senior police official of the Special Cell said: “We have identified the Dhanbad-based manufacturer and raids are being conducted in Jharkhand, Meerut and other parts of the country. The identities of the workers and the supplier have been disclosed by Kumar and accordingly the investigation is underway.”
