A 34-year-old man, who was previously involved in four cases of loot, was arrested for allegedly murdering his partner in crime, police said on Tuesday.
Neeraj Kumar was arrested for killing Sumit, who was found murdered in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district in January 2011. Kumar and his another associate, Naveen Kumar, were involved in the crime. While Naveen was arrested, Kumar was at large for over a year.
Neeraj Kumar, who was declared an absconder and proclaimed offender in the case, was arrested on Monday. 'On sustained interrogation, he revealed that Sumit was his close friend and also co-accused in a case related to looting of a truck carrying bags of almonds,' a senior police official said.
The official said Neeraj decided to eliminate Sumit after he overheard him talking to someone about killing him.
'On 3 January 2011, Neeraj persuaded Sumit to accompany him in his jeep to Muzaffarnagar near Mansoor Pur. On the way, they consumed liquor and Neeraj shot Sumit dead. Later he crushed the body under the wheels of his Tata Safari and left it there,' he said.
