Man held for duping people; wife absconding

A man has been arrested from Rani Bagh in north-west Delhi for duping people by changing the amount mentioned on cheques given by them to bigger amount, using ‘magic’ pens. ‘The accused has been identified as Deepak Girdhar alias Ajay, who duped victims by using pens whose ink could be easily erased,’ said P Karunakaran, deputy commissioner of police.

According to police, on 16 September, a complaint was lodged by  Madhubala, a resident of Rani Bagh, who said that she was cheated of Rs 59,000 by a couple claiming to be representatives of HDFC Bank. Police then  apprehended Girdhar from Dilshad Garden. On sustained interrogation, it was revealed that Girdhar and his ‘junior’ Madia alias Shobhna were married to each other and hailed from Haridwar.

Girdhar used to work as a loan agent and thus knew the procedure of obtaining loans from banks. The couple then devised this method of duping people by getting cheques of petty amounts and changing it to a bigger amount.

They were careful enough to change the amount to the extent as would be available in the bank accounts of their victims.  Madia is still at large. Investigation of the case is still under progress and raids are being conducted to apprehend her, official said.
