Man crushed to death by agriculture dept’s car

A 45-year-old man was crushed to death by a speeding car, which reportedly belonged to the agriculture department of Delhi government, near the Delhi Secretariat on Tuesday evening. The driver of the car was immediately arrested by the police.
The victim, identified as Sam Mathew, was a clerk in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and resided in east Delhi’s Patparganj area. Mathew was walking along the pavement beside the Delhi Secretariat <g data-gr-id="25">wall,</g> when he was hit suddenly by a white Ambassador near the gate number 2. Later, it emerged that the car belonged to the department of agriculture, said a police official.
According to the police, the incident was reported around 5.30 pm. The driver, identified as <g data-gr-id="31">Sudama</g> (48), apparently lost his balance and hit Mathew. After that, the car rammed into the pavement and burst its tyre. The driver was held by passers-by and one of them called up the police. However, Sudama was not found to be in an inebriated state or driving under the influence of any other substance.
“Mathew was rushed to the Lok Nayak hospital, where he was declared brought dead, and the driver was arrested immediately. A case was registered at the IP Estate police station and the driver was booked under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of IPC,” said Paramaditya, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central).
Mathew’s identity was ascertained with the help of his identity card found in his pocket and his family was soon informed about the incident.
