A 62-year-old man accused his neighbour of stealing Rs 3 lakh from his bank account on Tuesday. Apparently, the neighbour, having gained the trust of the victim, had swapped his ATM card with victim's while pretending to help him and had later misused his card.
Shivmuni, a resident of east Delhi's Trilokpuri area and a pensioner, maintained a State Bank of India account in Trilokouri branch. He opened the account in 2009 and applied for an ATM card in 2010.
According to the complaint registered at Kalyanpuri police station, Shivmuni's neighbour, identified as Raghuvansh Lal, had insisted that he apply for the ATM card. When Shivmuni received the ATM card, he had asked Raghuvansh to show him how to use the card for cash withdrawals. Apparently, Shivmuni withdrew Rs 100 from the ATM in Raghuvansh's presence.
But Shivmuni claimed that he had not used the ATM card or the account after that for almost a year and a half.
When he finally went to the bank last Friday, he found that around Rs 3 lakh was missing from his account. When he told his relatives about the loss, they had checked the ATM card and found that it belonged to Raghuvansh. 'When I approached Raghuvansh, he threatened me saying that he would register a criminal case against me for taking his ATM card,' said Shivmuni. According to Shivmuni, Raghvansh had swapped the ATM card while pretending to teach him.
'I noticed about the cheating after almost a year and a half. Meanwhile, money had been withdrawn from my account over time,' added Shivmuni.
A case under the Section 406/420 of IPC has been registered in Kalyanpuri police station. The police questioned Raghuvash, but has not arrested him yet. 'We are in the process of verifying the allegations,' said a police officer.
