Now a days cheating on the pretext of marriage has become very common, especially after Internet boom. In a recent incident, a divorcee woman, resident of Malviya Nagar, got married to a man who lives in UK. She was then allegedly cheated of Rs 11 lakh, soon after the marriage.
According to the complaint lodged by the victim on Saturday, she got married in February 2012, after being introduced to the accused through a matrimonial website on June 2010.
The woman had made her profile on shaadi.com, where she met Noel Jayraj Maida, the accused. In some time, they became good friends and started talking on phone as well.
A few months later, they decided to marry each other. As per the decision, Maida came to India and got married to the victim in a church in Malviya Nagar. Parents of Maida hail from Indore. The couple even received a certificate of marriage issued by Evangelical Church of India.
‘In the wedding function, only a few close relatives of the accused were present. It was very surprising that none of his friends came to attend the ceremony,’ said the victim in her complaint.
Soon after the marriage, the accused demanded cash and jewellery from her on the pretext of taking her along with him. ‘Before leaving for London, he took Rs 5 lakh cash on the pretext of arranging VISA, and also took jewellery worth Rs 6 lakh, including four diamond sets,’ the victim told police.
Later, Maida started ignoring her, making some excuse or the other. Sensing trouble, the woman made another profile on the same website, and her husband started flirting with her again. The woman then lodged a complaint against him.
Before approaching the police, she informed the accused about the complaint. He then threatened her of uploading her personal photographs, which he was carrying with him, on the Internet.
When a senior police official was contacted, he refused to share any information regarding the case. However, another official said, ‘Investigation is in process and a case under sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly ), 406(criminal breach of trust) and 34 (acts done by several persons in futherance of common intention) of Indian Penal Code has been registered against the accused.’ Deputy commissioner of police (South) Chhaya Sharma remained unavailable for comments.
