The accused has been identified as Amit Sharma who was later arrested. A BBA dropout, Sharma did his schooling from Modern School in Noida and was employed with a footwear firm for some time. Meanwhile, police have recovered the entire amount of Rs 30 lakh from the accused’s possession.
According to the police, on June 22, Sharma, employee in a private footwear firm based in New Friends Colony reported that while he was coming on motorcycle from Sagar Apartments near Tilak Marg, unidentified men in Maruti Swift Dzire car intercepted him and robbed him of Rs 30 lakh which he was carrying in a backpack. His employer, Prashant Modi had asked him to take the amount of cash from the concerned person.
“He told us that he took a U-turn from Bhagwandass crossing and when he was about to reach Patiala House Court, unidentified men in Swift Dzire car waylaid him and one of them forcibly snatched bag containing Rs 30 lakh from him,” said Jatin Narwal, Deputy Commissioner of Police, (New Delhi).
Based on his complaint, police registered a case.
“When Amit was questioned, police was not convinced with his version. Moreover, police cross checked the CCTV footage of the area and took out the Call Detail Records of Amit and other employees of the footwear firm. Cops found that no such robbery incident took place during the said time of June 22, said a senior police official.
“It was only when he was extensively questioned that Amit broke down and disclosed that he staged a fake robbery and had misappropriated the amount,” said the DCP. A case under relevant sections of the IPC has been registered against the accused at the Tilak Marg police station. Further investigation is on.
