Mamata’s magic continues

While, Trinamool Congress managed to secure Krishnanagar, Jhargram, Howrah and West Midnapore municipalities, Congress left with only Berhampore municipality. ‘Mandate of Bengal is loud and clear.

This was the last election before Lok Sabha polls. People have supported Mamata Banerjee,’ senior party leader Mukul Roy said.

Poll results at Berhampore in the Murshidabad district was interesting. Known as a strong bastion of Congress, TMC managed to won in two wards for the first time out of 25 seats. The Congress won 23 seats. In 2008, Congress ended with a clean sweep by winning all the 25 seats.

Also, in Jhargram, Left Front has been defeated after 30 years where Trinamool Congress emerged as major player by winning 16 out of 17 seats. The party (Trinamool Congress), however, retained the Midnapore and Krishnanagar.

‘People have trusted Mamata Banerjee for her several developmental work in the state. We will celebrate this victory on ma, mati, manush dibas (mother, earth, people day) at Brigade Parade Ground on January 30, 2014,’ Roy told the media people.

In Krishnanagar, the TMC won 22 of the 24 seats, while the rest two wards went to independent candidates. The two independents candidates has joined Trinamool Congress. In Midnapore, TMC won 13 of the 25 seats, Left Front got five and the Congress managed to get six seats and the BJP got one.

Howrah’s Mayor Mamta Jaiswal of CPI (M) has lost to BJP’s Gita Roy, while Deputy Mayor Kaberi Moitra of CPI lost to TMC candidate Sabitri Devi Shaw. Out of 50, Trinamool Congress won in 42 seats.

Minister of state for railway Adhir Chowdhury, on the context of Trinamool Congress’s entry in to his territory in Berhampore, said, ‘We should and we will take immediate steps to reverse the situation. The candidates Kanai Roy and Pradip Nandi of ward number three and five won on behalf of Trinamool Congress through their own effort and the credits goes to them and not to the TMC’.

Both Kanai and Pradip were Congress leaders but later joined Trinamool  Congress following a rift within the party.
