West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday said gender rights had been on her agenda ever since she took charge. Speaking at ‘Shiksha Ratna’ award ceremony ahead of Teacher’s Day celebrations, she said she started thinking about gender sensitisation and gender rights ever since she took charge and received complaints in this regard. “Now we have all provisions and even a development board for them,” Banerjee said.
India’s first transgender college principal Manabi Bandopadhyay, who was also present, hoped that more people from the third gender would get equal opportunities in society. The CM asked everyone to respect teachers, her comment coming at a time when violence in campuses of school and colleges across the state became a recurring phenomenon.
Says Swachh Bharat not new
The Centre’s ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ is not new and it has been going on in West Bengal for the 2-3 years in another name ‘Nirmal Bangla’, said CM Mamata Banerjee. “Remember that ‘Nirmal Bangla’ is another name for ‘Swachh Bharat’,” she said.
