Mamata on hold for no-confidence call

Bharatiya Janata Party is still to respond to Trinamool Congress president Mamata Banerjee’s call to Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj on Sunday seeking latter’s support to topple the UPA government at the centre. ‘We will take a decision in our parliamentary board meeting,’ said BJP spokesperson Prakash Javedkar on Monday.

However sources in the BJP say that Mamata is asking too much from them as it would be inappropriate for the principal opposition to support a no-confidence motion brought by a regional outfit. BJP, however, has already said that it would not bring any such motion of its own but could ponder over supporting it if someone else brings it.

Party insiders said that they were wary of either bringing a no confidence motion or supporting the motion, because of the bitter memories of 2008 and the party leaders admit that they would not want a repeat of the fiasco that occurred in Lok Sabha in 2008 resulting into the note for vote scam.

However, sources, do not rule out an outside chance of supporting such motion if support for it gains momentum.

On the other hand, the Congress is in combative mood. ‘When it comes to vote of confidence, we are totally confident we have the numbers... and when the strength will be tested, we will pass it,’ said party spokesperson Sandeep Dikshit.
